How do we write a company's vision and mission?
Short Answer:
Discuss and measure them daily and weekly; display results big on scoreboards and walls; and make them visible on digital dashboards on teams’ mobile devices. Break larger goals into weekly sprints and celebrate small wins (ring a bell whenever progress is made, for instance).
Longer Answer:
For decades gurus have used the term SMART goals. However, a team of professors at MIT suggested a better acronym FAST which better suggests how to set and stay focused on your goals:
*Frequently Discuss – that’s the power of Scaling Up’s daily and weekly meeting rhythm that drives frequent conversations about the goals and their KPIs, keeping them top of mind vs. sitting on a shelf.
Ambitious – attainable goals are low energy; so are ridiculous goals. Ambitious goals provide the right balance to keep things interesting.
Specific – like SMART goals, they need to be precisely stated and measurable. You need to know when you’ve reached the goal.
Transparent – display them big on walls and scoreboards so they can’t be missed. Everyone knows the score of a sporting event, updated real time. Do the same with your goals – and discuss progress in front of a team, not in one-on-ones where people can hide. The key is to have a healthy culture – one where people aren’t afraid to admit a mistake or needing to ask for help.
